RUGGERO'S AMUSEMENT Around the year 1070 the brother Roberto and Ruggero d'Hauteville arrived from Normandy in taking advantage of the disagreements between the saracens and with the help of Palermo's inhabitants, that wanted to be rid of the arabs, they conquered Palermo. To the normans we attribute the merit of creating tollerance among the people so that muslins, christian, hebrews and greeks could freely profess their beliefs and speak their own language. Palermo was already a multicultural metropolis back in medieval times. Part of norman heritage includes prestigious works of architecture which were built by availing themseves of the best local and arab craftsmenship hence the “arab-norman route”declared worldwide patrimony of humanity: “Norman palace, Palatina chapel, the curchs of San Cataldo, San Giovanni of hermits, Santa Maria of admiral, the Cathedral, the Castel of Zisa and the cathedrals of Monreale and Cefalù.
